Title: My Ghostly Valentine (A Banshee Creek Romance)
Genre: Light Paranormal/Romantic Comedy
Release Date: February 1, 2016
Descriptive Blurb: Town baker Patricia O’Dare wants to buy the famous, but sadly derelict, Rosemoor Bed & Breakfast, and turn it into a luxurious tea shop. Only one thing stands in her way, bad boy restaurateur Zach Franco who wants the building so he can expand his pizza empire. Add a pesky ghost that seems to dislike the idea of having its home turned into a restaurant, and Banshee Creek’s first Valentine Day’s Ball and things get dicey pretty fast.
All’s fair in love and war, specially where the incorrigible Zach Franco is concerned, but as the fight over the Rosemoor heats up, Patricia fears that she may be winning the battle, but losing her chance at love.
“Have a ghost and a smile.”
My impressions: I normally don’t read Ghost-themed books. I just find the concept silly, which is exactly why I was intrigued by the premise of this book. It’s a comic take on the concept…with a love story. So I gave it a chance. A gamble that paid off! I really enjoyed this book. The PRoVE Folks and their antics were hilarious! Good grief, I haven’t giggled this much reading a book in ages! Some of the names of the paranormal-themed food…LOL! The Vampire Deer…The drones flying around everywhere…*tee hee hee*. The entire book has a spoof-like feel to it; the humor is good-natured and fun…never too silly.
The Love Story: Light-hearted romance at its best. Patricia and Zach are highly amusing in their hesitant migration towards each other…and very sweet once they get together. They are genuinely likable. They have history as friends, and they progress at a believable pace towards love and commitment. No instant love here…thank goodness. I hate shake-n-bake love stories.
Minor Beefs: The typos are distracting. One more round of editing would be a good idea. Also, there is a bit of info-dumping at the beginning. It took me a minute to get my head wrapped around all the names Sara, Laurie, Elizabeth, Brenda, Patricia, etc…but admittedly, this is a book written in series…and I haven’t read any of the previous books. Thus, this could be why I was a bit lost in the sea of characters, but as the story moved along, I got everyone’s name straight. Writing style is a bit wordy, but not so much that it takes away.
Extra Touch: Nice use of a shifting point of view so that we get to see things through both Patricia’s and Zach’s eyes…and there’s never any confusion about who’s who. Its never jarring when the POV changes…as its usually done with the natural chapter change.
Random Thought: How is it that the residents of Banshee Creek are not grossly overweight? Seriously, all they eat is pizza and pastries. Just saying.
The Verdict: Two thumbs up! A hilarious comic romance…with a paranormal twist.
